BOARD OF HEALTH WORKSHOP

PRESENT:        Dr. James Taylor, Chairman, Pat Lariviere, R.N., Co-Chairman, Beverly Knox, R.N., Dr. Lois Roth-Johnson, Dr. Martin Haspel, Jane Crowley, M.S., R.S., Health Agent, Susan Barker, Assistant Health Agent, Sandy Bayne, Water Management Committee, Bill Nugent, Waster Management Committee

I.      REVIEW OF EASTHAM POND PROPOSAL AND REQUEST FOR SUPPORT OF THE ACTION PLAN TO EVALUATE 11 PONDS AND                     REMEDIATION OF 2 PRIORITIZED PONDS, SANDY BAYNE

Sandy Bayne, Water Management Committee discussed with the Board the Request For Proposal in which pond remediation for 11 of Eastham’s ponds is proposed for Nitrogen and Phosphorous.  The RFP has been presented to the Board of Selectmen, and consists of three stages.  1. use of existing data to prioritize for 11 ponds to help create an action plan.  2. select 2 ponds which are in the worst condition.  3. remediation for the 2 ponds, permits to be acquired.  This is not anticipated to be for this year.  Sandy Bayne asked the Board of Health for a vote of approval to support the Request for Proposals and for the Board of Selectmen to go forward.

Dr. James Taylor made a motion to support the RFP.
Dr. Lois Roth-Johnson seconded the motion.

SO VOTED UNANIMOUSLY  

        II.     DISCUSSION OF ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO BE PROVIDED BY VNA, MARY DEVLIN

        Mary Devlin and Kathy Berry of the Visiting Nurse Association discussed with the Board possible outreach programs to benefit the Eastham Community      as a whole, not just the senior citizens.  It was discussed that a possible event not during the school day would benefit the community as more Eastham         citizens could attend.

        It was presented to the Board members by Dr. Taylor to come up with any ideas that they would like seen done for the community, like a Health Fair, to  be discussed at the next meeting.

        III.    WATER QUALITY PROGRAM AND WASTEWATER UPDATES

        Jane Crowley updated the Board on the Water Quality Monitoring Program which is evaluated annually when a full year of data is available.  Charts and   trends are consistent with data done by         Cape Cod Commission in another 10 year study.

        A discussion of the upcoming Silent Spring study of 5 Eastham Wells which will do in depth testing of those five wells for prescription drugs and other         substances.
